To Stream or not to Stream, streaming is now the question…

Alexander Ljung, CEO of Soundcloud made a statement at this years Midem event that he felt Apple Music was a good thing for the industry. The life cycle of ‘streaming’ is still at a very early stage and he felt that with Apple’s innovative charm and marketing muscle they will be able to reach further and wider than anyone else and educate people in the new ways of accessing music.

Of course, the ethical debate rages on and nobody has really come up with a business model yet that gives people access to the music they want and reward the artists who provide that content with a fair share of the profits.  My advice to new artists, however, when Im asked about the likes of Spotify is you wont make any money on there but you may be found.

But is their something else going on here that shows evidence of the artist using the situation to better their position as well. One by one big names are starting to leave the streaming scene and as they do the wake of their choices are leaving different tastes in peoples mouths. I Imagine the majors and streaming sites concerned don’t have a particularly pleasant taste in the mouth but what about the artist themselves, what about the music fan and what about the industry in general as content is mopped up by the masses for virtually nothing in return. Names such as Prince, Radiohead, Taylor Swift and now Neil Young have all been vocal about moving off the sites and is this for genuine reasons or is this just a publicity stunt that the early adopters can benefit from.

Neil Young for example has taken the stance that he will not be allowing streaming services to deploy his music because the quality of the music is not good enough as he explains quite clearly by saying, ‘I don’t need my music to be devalued by the worst quality in the history of broadcasting or any other form of distribution.’

Prince has gone in to streaming with his eyes wide open and his mouth firmly closed.

Strong words!

Prince gave no reason for why he pulled all his music from all streaming services except Tidal and then later posted a new track ‘Hard rock Lover’ on to Soundcloud. Is this a business decision or just good business? My advice would be do what the big names are doing and do whats right for you.

And my advice will also tell you that if you must stream then Aurovine.com as we all know with the new Audiocoin will always be the smartest investment.
